Role description
- Flexible team of instrumentalists, with on average one person per orchestral instrument. Instrumentalists who participated in the Academy as vocalists, composers and/or conductors are welcome to apply.
- Co-curators the 2021 Autumn Festival (15.11 – 21.11.2021) alongside the Lucerne Festival artistic team and the Diversity Steering Committee.
- Participation as performer in the 2021 Autumn Festival.
- Member of the reorganized “Academy”-Orchestra [N.B. working title] and continued participation in and co-curation of the Autumn Festival for two years (2022–23), with potential for extension for a third year.
- Pedagogical role with the Lucerne Festival Academy from 2022, including jury membership for player selection and sectional coaching. Existing coaches will work as previously with the Academy in 2021, but thereafter will only be invited on a masterclass basis.
- Jury membership for selection of the reorganized “Academy”-Orchestra members.
- Jury membership for selection of your successor as an LFC Leader. The initial selection will be made by Felix Heri (Head of Lucerne Festival Academy), Mark Sattler (Dramaturgy) and Michael Haefliger (Executive and Artistic Director).
- Fee on a weekly basis (working hours to be confirmed by contract in advance of each project). An annual allowance for travel costs and other expenses will be agreed alongside the contract.
- Participation in Swiss Re Leadership Mentoring programme (virtual and/or in person) [N.B. more details to follow].
Skill profile (essential)
- Demonstrable long-term commitment to contemporary music (music written since 1945).
- Desire to deepen, innovate and diversify the role of young classical musicians.
- Willingness to move beyond the concert hall and engage in new concert formats, e.g. performative/staged concerts, cross-genre programming, reaching atypical audiences etc.
- For string players: orchestral experience, preferably in leadership positions.
- Commitment to at least a two-year term (following November 2021), scheduling flexibility to allow travel to Lucerne in August/September and November. Confirmed dates will be communicated as far in advance as possible.
- Fluent leadership, teamwork, and mentoring skills in English.
Skill profile (desired)
- Orchestral experience (particularly within contemporary music).
- Chamber orchestra and ensemble experience (particularly within contemporary music).
- Pedagogical training and/or experience (college level or higher).
- Entrepreneurial experience curation/administration (concert series, festival etc.).
- Fluent leadership, teamwork, and mentoring skills in languages in addition to English.
